eBook Guide

Here is a little guide we put together with quick instructions on getting your eBook onto the device of your choice.

It is not a comprehensive how-to on all of the eBook reader options though it does cover some of the basic instructions for Kindle, iPhone and iPad.

LOADING YOUR NEW EBOOK ONTO THE DEVICE OF YOUR CHOICE

A Quick Reference Guide

Note:  Your eBook is available to you in both ePub and Mobi formats so you can have your book on all your devices.

I. Mobi Files for Kindle or Kindle App

Links to your book will be emailed to you with your receipt. The top download link is the Mobi file for Kindle readers.

Get your Kindle App-ready eBook onto Your Ipad or Iphone From the Receipt:

If you are using an iPad or Iphone you may click on the file link and select to open your file with the Kindle app.

To get your Kindle-friendly book onto your Kindle Using a Computer - Email, USB, or Dropbox

Download your Kindle file onto your computer and save it somewhere that is easy to find again. (Please note: Your computer will probably not recognise the file type and so won't allow you to open in whilst it is on your computer. Don't worry, this doesn't mean that there is a problem with the file, it will be openable as soon as you get in onto your Kindle.)

a. Transferring Your Files by Emailing to Your Kindle Account

You can email your Kindle files as attachments. The files must be in one of the supported formats, and they'll be added to the Documents section of your Kindle.

  • To set this up, log into Amazon.com and then go to Your Account: Manage Your Kindle: Personal Document Settings.
  • You'll need to set up the authorized email account and address. Generally it will be something like "your_name_here@kindle.com." Only emails coming from approved email addresses will work.
  • Attach the file to an email and send it to your Kindle email address (the file name will be the 13 digit ISBN and it will end with .mobi). You do not need to put anything else in the email or subject line.
  • Your eBook should then appear in your Kindle library (this may take a couple of minutes) provided it is connected to the internet – otherwise it will appear the next time your device connects.
  • If you transfer your file this way, it will also appear in your cloud which will mean that your eBook will appear in your library (or be available to instantaneously download from your cloud) across all your devices or Kindle apps that are registered to your Kindle address.

Please note: the email address that you send your file from MUST be in the ‘Approved Personal Document E-mail List’ for your Kindle so that it can receive the file. You can check this by visiting your Kindle 'Personal Document Settings' in your account on the Amazon website

b. Transferring Your Files by USB:

If you use a micro-usb cable and connect it to your computer, you can transfer files to and from your Kindle just like it was an external hard drive.
  • Place any .mobi files in the Books folder, and place .pdf and other formats in the Documents folder.
  • Once you've added your files, you may need to restart the Kindle to get it to recognize your new books.

c. Transferring Your eBook file Using Dropbox:

  • If you use Dropbox, you'll want to navigate to your eBook file and rather than just tapping to open it, you'll want to select the triangle to the right of the file name.
  • Next, tap Export.
  • Choose Save to SD Card (your Kindle doesn't actually have an SD card, but this gets you to the internal storage space).
  • Select either Books (for .mobi files) or Documents (for .pdf, .txt, .doc, and other files).
  • Tap Export.
  • Once you've done this, you should restart your Kindle Fire. Your books will appear after that. If your book does not appear, double check that you waited for the book to fully copy to your Kindle's hard drive and double check that you chose the correct folder for the file format.

II. ePub file for the  iPad/iPhone/iPod

Get Your eBook Onto Your iPad/iPhone/iPod Without Using iTunes:

Directly on the iPad/iPhone/iPod(recommended)
Make sure the free iBooks app is on your iDevice.

  • Click the link in your email receipt (the second one down is the ePub file) - it will load in the top bar as if it was going to a website.
  • Then a popup comes up with options: Select “Open in iBooks”.
  • The eBook will open and be added to your iBooks collection.
  • From now on, you can open the ePub book from the iBooks app on your iPad/iPhone/iPod.

Computer to iPad/iPhone/iPod Using iTunes:

  • Download the ePub title and save it on your desktop or someplace on your computer you can easily access.
  • Launch iTunes and select (Add to Library…) from the File menu.
  • Select the eBook you downloaded and click the Choose button.
  • From iTunes select Books from the list of libraries on the left. The book should now be listed in your iTunes library.
  • Connect your iPad to the computer and select it from the list of devices on the left.
  • Choose the “Books” tab.
  • Check the Sync Books checkbox if it isn’t already enabled. You can sync all books in your library with your iPad, or choose the select books you want to sync to your iPad.
  • Now click the Apply or Sync button at the bottom right of the window.
  • *You may receive a warning that this will erase all the books on your iPad if this is your first iBooks sync. *
  • Click the Sync Books button.
  • Once the sync has completed you can open iBooks on your iPad to read your newly transferred title.

III. Android Phone

Because there are so many eBook readers for Android Phones we have included this link to the Top eBook Readers for Android from About.com

This guide does cover some of the basics of how to get your eBook to your device.  Given the myriad ways to enjoy eBooks it is not the definitive guide to all the options available. We recommend going to your chosen eBook reader's website for more detailed instructions, how-to's and troubleshooting of your chosen eBook reader.

Your eBook downloads are included in your email receipt and can be accessed through the account you create during your purchase.  We do realize that sometimes things can go awry. Please contact us at orders@pacificinstitute.org if you do not recieve your files as you expected.

Thank you for your purchase. We hope you enjoy your eBook and we welcome you to explore some of the other titles available through Elders Academy Press.

Warm regards,
